Acrylics

A few years back, I was painting in a realistic style, mostly still lifes of fruits and vegetables. Although they are gorgeous and much appreciated, I got tired of the attempted replication and found Oil and Cold Wax. This pivoted me toward non-representational expression…something that I thought I’d never do but as you can see, things changed.

I had never really painted beyond college requirements…my major was graphic design but I happily discovered pastels, while living in Europe and had a love affair with them for quite a while.

Oil & Cold Wax

Oil and Cold Wax found me and I knew instantly that this process was something that I wanted to pursue. The spontaneity and looseness that I found with this medium helped me to break free from the replication that I had gotten bored with. There is serendipity in this process and that unexpected outcome, lit me up! It has spilled into my Acrylic work and the Mixed Media that I am leaning into presently.

Statement

When I was first introduced to Oil & Cold Wax, I was immediately captivated!  After years of “replicating” nature in a realistic style with Pastels and Acrylics, I had been striving for a more personal reflection of my experiences, inspirations and interpretations.

My “voice” has evolved with this medium. The interplay between colorful layers of set wax is, in my view, exciting, relevant, and soulful. They are blended, smeared, etched, and imprinted, in much the same way that we build on our experiences along life’s journey.  The process welcomes experimentation, stimulates growth and delights with serendipity and the insight gained from the Oil and Cold Wax process has profoundly influenced my Acrylic and Mixed Media work.

It is my hope that you will find this metaphor for life insightful, as you visually witness foundations that support evolving surfaces.  These surfaces record the journey, as they emerge in sweeping color, while the process exposes swirls, textures, marks, impressions, and patterns, in other words, its history…from deep within.
